On July 29th, A University of Cincinnati police officer was charged with murder of Samuel DuBose. The officer’s body camera video showed the officer shooting the unarmed motorist in the head. The officer, Ray Tensing, had stopped Mr. Dubose for driving without a front license plate. The officer’s video revealed that Mr. Dubose was not belligerent or aggressive toward the police officer. Hamilton County Prosecutor, Joe Deters, described the incident as very poor policing and stated,

“He wasn’t dealing with someone wanted for murder. He was dealing with someone without a front license plate,” Deters said, describing that offense as “chicken crap stuff.”

All of America has heard of Freddie Gray’s tragic death. Freddie Gray, a 25-year old Baltimore black man suffered a severe spine injury during his arrest on April 12, 2015, and died one week later from his injuries. A video shows Mr. Gray, screaming in pain, while dragged by two police officers to a police van. During the van ride, Mr. Gray fell into a coma after he suffered a major spinal injury. Baltimore City States Attorney filed criminal charges against six police officers after the medical examiner ruled that the death was a homicide. Mr. Gray was arrested for possessing an alleged illegal “switchblade.”

Walter Scott was shot by a North Charleston police officer during a traffic stop for a non-functioning brake light. The officer was charged with murder after a video revealed the officer shooting Mr. Scott in the back while he was running from the police officer. Mr.Scott was unarmed.

In all three tragic incidents, videos, either police officer’s body cameras or bystander’s cellphones, had recorded what really happened to each black man during a routine stop. In all three occurrences, the videos contradicted the police officer’s statements and reports. If there were no videos, in all probability, none of the police officers would have faced criminal charges. Every police officer should be required to wear a body camera. By doing so, the truth will show itself.
