The Corrections Division of the Sheriff’s Office is responsible for housing incarcerated offenders who are awaiting trial or transfer to the State of Alabama’s Department of Corrections. The Corrections Division processes approximately 43,000 inmates in and out of jail annually, and maintains an average population of 1,000 inmates between two facilities located in downtown Birmingham and Bessemer. Currently, the Jefferson County Jail (Birmingham and Bessemer) have a total of 185 Deputies that are assigned to both locations. The staff assigned to the Corrections Division are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for inmates.
