The tragic deaths of Samuel DuBose, Eric Garner, and Freddy Gray, has awakened all Americans to the illegal actions of a small number of police and prison officers. Freddie Gray, a 25-year old Baltimore black man suffered a severe spinal injury during his arrest on April 12, 2015, and died one week later from his injuries. A video showed Mr. Gray, screaming in pain, while dragged by two police officers to a police van. During the van ride, Mr. Gray fell into a coma after after he suffered a major spinal injury. Baltimore City States Attorney filed criminal charges against six police officers after the medical examiner ruled that the death was a homicide.

Recently, New York agreed to a settlement of 5.9 million for the family of Eric Garner. Mr. Garner died after the Staten Island police used excessive force by putting a chokehold on him.
