Martha Stewart’s Prison Stay

Martha Stewart tells Katie Couric , “It was horrifying and no one, no one, should have to go through that kind of indignity really except for murderers, and there are a few other categories, but no one should have to go through that.”

Thirteen years ago, Martha Stewart was sentenced to five months for lying about a stock sale. Fortunately, for her, prison time was at a federal minimum security prison–West Virginia’s Alderson Prison Camp.

Although minimum security is still a prison, an inmate, even a celebrity inmate like Martha Stewart, is locked up and  correctional officers controlled her life in prison. However, if Martha Stewart had served her sentence in a medium security or maximum security federal prison, then she would have realized how lucky that her five months of incarceration was at Alderson  Prison Camp.

A Prison Consultant would have prepared Marta Stewart for her time in prison. Only a former inmate could have helped her prepare for daily life in prison. She would have learned from a prison consultant about co-existing with her bunk mate, understanding correctional officers, prison taboos, medical care, and other complexities of daily prison life.

With knowledge and preparation, Martha Stewart would have avoided the existing pitfalls that await any first time inmate, and would not have been so shocked by daily existence in prison, even a federal minimum security prison.
