Update 5/5/20: Prisons-Jails & Corona Virus

Published

on

As of May 5th, the United States has 1.2 million confirmed cases and 69,680 deaths. The Corona virus has started to  infect our jails and prisons.   Dr. Jeff Keller, medical director for the Bonneville County Jail, in Idaho, stated,“Once (corona virus) gets into an enclosed system like that, it kind of gets wild.”Because correctional facilities are a unique environment, there are complicated issues, such as visitation, security, etc.

What is Happening in our Jails and Prisons:

1. Texas–COVID-19 deaths in Texas prisons hits 25, confirmed cases surpass 1600

2. National–Coronavirus sweeping through massive US prison population

3. Oregon–Marion, Polk county jails slash inmate populations by 30 to 75% in response to COVID-19

4.National–American Jails Are Now Among the Deadliest Coronavirus Hotspots

5. Mid-South–Families concerned as COVID-19 spreads through Mid-South jails

6. Indiana–Rise in coronavirus cases in crowded Indian jails prompts concerns

7. Massachusetts–Bristol sheriff and Joe Kennedy III clash over jail outburst by ICE detainees

Jails and prisons have no choice, but to take immediate and effective action to protect inmates, correctional officers, and civilian employees, from this Pandemic.
