Update 4/28/20: Prisons-Jails & Corona Virus

Indiana court officials have to whether pretrial incarceration of criminal defendants during the current pandemic, has become cruel and unusual punishment. Since February, the Corona virus has infected almost every state’s jails–prisons. The virus does not discriminate, it has struck both inmates and correctional officers.

 

 

Latest Headlines for Prisons-Jails and the Corona Virus:

1. Illinois: At Cook County Jail in Chicago, more than 460 inmates and 360 sheriff’s employees have tested positive. Nearly half have recovered, but six inmates and one correctional officer have died.

2. New York City: At Rikers Island and other jails in New York City, roughly 378 prisoners are infected and three have died.

3. California: 178 people have tested positive and one has died.

Jails and prisons have no choice, but to take effective action to protect inmates, correctional officers, and civilian employees from this Pandemic.
